Statement from MPP Thompson about the impact of electricity rates on Ontario communities
The following is a statement from Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson after supporting a motion in the House today denouncing Liberal actions on electricity costs which have made life unaffordable for Ontarians:
“There is no question that the actions of the Liberal government have made life harder for communities across the province. In my riding of Huron-Bruce, places like legions, curling clubs and arenas are having trouble keeping the lights on.
These stories are not just coming out of my riding – they are being echoed throughout communities across the province.
Our community centres are hubs that host a wide array if important events from weddings to Veteran recognition ceremonies. They serve as the bedrock of our communities and right now valued activities and traditions are threatened because of the Liberal’s mismanagement as well as their inaction to get back onto a path toward affordable energy.
Community centres are having to resort to fundraising and measures that are above and beyond the norm and that is simply unacceptable. For instance, a local curling club is preparing for electricity costs as high as $5,000 per month for the 2016/2017 season, while a local Royal Canadian Legion is now fundraising for a $40,000 propane furnace in order to mitigate the high cost of electric heat.
These stories are sad evidence of the fact that life is more expensive for the people of Ontario under this Liberal Government because of their ill-conceived policies.”
