Ontario’s Demonstration Schools Will Remain Open another Year
QUEEN’S PARK – Thanks to the efforts of concerned families and opposition MPPs, Ontario’s demonstration schools are set to remain open for another year, which is welcome news for students and their families in Huron-Bruce who rely on schools like Robarts and Amethyst, says MPP for Huron-Bruce Lisa Thompson.
The decision to keep the schools open, which came down on Wednesday, is the latest in a well-documented record of Liberal backtracking due to strong opposition to bad decisions and policy exercised by the current government.
“Robarts and Amethyst have given young people the opportunities to build their skills, in preparation for their next stage of education” said Thompson. “Their closure should never even have been on the table. It’s shameful that the Liberals are trying to balance the books at the expense of children’s future dreams and goals.”
While the schools will remain open for the 2016/17 academic year, the Liberals, disappointingly, have still not committed to keeping them open in the long-term.
“Families want to plan for the future of their children’s education, and they can’t do that without answers. The Liberals need to do more for the families who currently rely on, as well as the families considering, the supports these schools offer, and commit to keeping them open.”
