MPP Thompson Demands Liberals Follow Neonic Recommendations from ECO
Queen’s Park– Today in the House, MPP for Huron-Bruce Lisa Thompson demanded the Liberal government follow the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario’s recommendations regarding the need for more Ontario-focused, science-based research conducted with regards to the use of neonics.
Standing in the House, Thompson cited the ECO’s Annual Report released yesterday, Small Things Matter, saying “The ECO has identified gaps in the knowledge regarding neonicotinoid use and the need for Ontario-focused, science-based research into the matter. But the Liberal government hasn’t done this, and instead, has forged ahead to create a policy that is handcuffing Ontario’s agricultural sector”.
Thompson has asked the Minister to halt the ban on neonics until the government can enact the ECO’s recommendation.
In his response, the Minister for Environment and Climate Change failed to confirm that Ontario-based research will be conducted.
